Assateague’s Rackliffe House to be Restored as a Museum
DNR is pleased to announce plans for the Rackliffe House at Assateague State Park to become a public museum, under a historic long-term lease negotiated with the Rackliffe House Trust, Inc. Rackliffe approached DNR two years ago with the concept of restoring the vacant house into a museum and heritage discovery center to be used exclusively for educational purposes. The non-profit organization will restore the house to its original 1752 appearance and interpret its history and that of the surrounding coastal bays. The museum will complement the natural resource focus of the National Park Service’s Barrier Island Visitors Center, the State Park Visitor Center, and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Education and Research Center, forming a “campus” setting. A walking path to the site will eventually form part of a trail system within the park.
